WHY MASS TIMBER CONSTRUCTION

OUR CONVICTION

At PRESS, we strongly believe in the opportunity that mass timber construction presents to the design and building industry. As a rapidly renewable material, wood construction has existed for millennia; however, our industry has not evolved beyond time-intensive stick frame construction….until now. Large scale format building ‘legos’ and off-site fabrication are becoming increasingly important to move the building industry forward.

We understand the importance of material and panel optimization in establishing an efficient and cost prudent mass timber solution. While not all projects warrant heavy timber wood, PRESS understands the value mass timber may bring to a project - especially in an industry where labor shortages and material procurement are impacting construction schedules.

Trade consolidation and reduced on-site labor are key advantages of mass timber over traditional stick built construction. The ability for a cross laminated timber floor to act as structure, fire separation, and finish all-in-one, from our view, can significantly accelerate construction schedules.

PRESS is at the forefront of mass timber architecture and design in the Inland NW. We have cultivated strong partnerships with leading engineers, consultants, and mass timber manufacturers to strengthen our knowledge base and to move mass timber design forward.

  • We prioritize collaboration with clients, contractors, and consultants from the outset. By engaging with all project stakeholders early, we ensure that our designs are efficient, sustainable, and optimized for mass timber. Our approach focuses on innovation and open communication to achieve the best results.

  • Mass timber offers a range of benefits, including reduced construction time, sustainable sourcing, reduced carbon footprint, and flexibility in design. It is especially beneficial in projects where sustainability, schedule efficiency, and design innovation are priorities.

  • Mass timber is a renewable resource; its production requires significantly less energy than concrete or steel. Mass timber also sequesters carbon, meaning it locks the CO2 absorbed during tree growth within the building, reducing overall carbon emissions. Mass timber is also versatile and can be used in a range of building types, from residential to commercial and industrial.

  • While the material cost of mass timber can be higher than traditional materials, the reduced labor and construction time often offset these costs. The all-in-one functionality of mass timber panels can streamline construction and reduce on-site trade coordination and conflicts, leading to cost savings. Shorter construction timeframes lead to reduced general construction costs and faster lease up.

  • Mass timber panels are designed to meet stringent fire safety standards. In the event of fire, the wood ‘mass’ chars the same as a wood log, insulating the structural core by providing natural fire resistance. Mass timber’s structural advantages are in its strength-to-weight ratio; it can carry similar loads to concrete and steel with less material weight.

  • Off site fabrication is a key advantage of mass timber building, allowing for precise, high quality construction in a controlled environment. In turn this can minimize on site labor and speed up installation, which are beneficial to remote project locations and where labor shortages exist.
